Get Older, Get a Healthier Smile

Posted .

Modern advances in dentistry are making it more possible for adults to keep their natural teeth for their entire life. However, aging can also increase your susceptibility to oral conditions, which can include such things as dry mouth, oral cancer, gum disease, and oral thrush. As you get older, there are several things you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Increase your fluoride intake. Fluoride helps keep your tooth enamel strong. Try taking daily fluoride tablets, using fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, or getting a fluoride treatment at the dentist’s office. Some cities even incorporate fluoride into their tap water–fluoridated water is available to about 75% of the United States.

Avoid tobacco. Tobacco is strongly linked to oral cancer, and will increase the decay of your mouth. Avoid it at all costs. If you are addicted to tobacco, do everything you can to quit. We’re here to help.

Increase oral hydration. Many medications cause dry mouth; talk to your doctor about possible dry mouth side effects. Drink lots of water, chew sugar free gum, and limit your intake of alcohol and soda (these beverages actually dehydrate you).

Another important thing to do to keep your teeth healthy while you age is to visit the dentist every six months. To schedule an appointment in Oak Harbor, Washington, call Lemme Dental Studio at 360-675-3334 . Dr. Michael Lemme and our team look forward to seeing you!
